Learning About Our Taste Buds - Year One
This week, Year One had lots of fun learning about taste buds and how they help us know if something is sweet, sour, salty, or bitter. We talked about how our tongues have tiny taste buds that send messages to our brains about what we're eating.
To explore this, we became taste detectives!
Everyone tried small samples of different foods - honey, lemon, Bovril, jam, and cream cheese. We took turns tasting each one carefully and talked about the different flavours. Some faces scrunched up at the sour lemon, while others smiled at the sweet jam and honey.
The salty taste of Bovril surprised many of us!
After the tasting, we recorded our findings in a simple chart, marking whether each food was sweet, sour, salty, or bitter. The children enjoyed comparing their results and discovering that everyone's taste buds can sometimes notice flavours a bit differently.
It was a fun, hands-on science lesson full of giggles, new words, and curious taste discoveries!

RE celebration day!
Diwali Celebration Day - Year One
Year One had a wonderful time celebrating Diwali, the Festival of Lights! We learned that Diwali is a special festival celebrated by Hindus all around the world.
The children listened to the story of Rama and Sita and discovered why people light lamps to celebrate the victory of good over evil.
Everyone enjoyed making their own clay diva lamps, decorating them with bright colours and sparkles to take home.
Using our coding robot Botley, the children also had great fun tracing Rangoli patterns, practising their programming skills while creating beautiful designs.
It was a joyful and creative day full of colour, learning, and celebration, helping us all understand and appreciate different traditions and cultures.

Halloween Bake Off!
Thank you so much for the fantastic cake donations and for taking part in the Halloween disco!
We made an amazing £500 to go towards the school.

How are making history?
Thank you to all our parents and grandparents who sent in photos of themselves as children. We are very lucky to receive nearly 60 photos! The children loved looking at these and comparing childhood now to childhood in the past. Our Year 1's wrote sentences about these similarities and differences.

Drawing warm-ups
Every week we see such improvement in the children's drawing. We begin each art lesson with a drawing 'warm-up', this term's have all been focussed on insects. In the above pictures we have used ink on sugar paper but we've also been lucky enough to use pencil, graphite, compressed charcoal, willow charcoal, soft pastels and oil pastels this term!

Eric Carle inspired collages
Look at our beautiful Eric Carle inspired collages! The class carefully hand painted their own papers with acrylic paint, just like Eric Carle does. These were then cut into hundreds of different shapes which the children chose from to make their insects.

Music madness!
We were so lucky to have a visit from Rocksteady this week, where we took part in a fun and engaging assembly. We then took part in a workshop where we got to explore some different instruments and even created our own band!

Investigation time
We have had lots of fun introducing our new science unit, All about me! We have looked at how our bodies move and what we need to survive. We started this weeks lesson with a fun starter looking at chemical reactions!

Messy maths
In reception we have been exploring the number four this week and looking at all the different ways we can make number block 4! The year ones have finished their place value unit so we are now looking at additition and subtraction within 10!

English in the sun!
Our unit is all about Augustus and his smile! We went out onto the field to role play different parts of the story and our friends had to guess what part of the story we were acting!
Well done to Henry Brittan, Vivienne and Elin for getting this weeks celebration awards!
Don't forget to save the date for our Harvest assembly on Thursday 23rd October at 2.30pm.

Snail Fact Files
Year 1's have completed their snail fact files this week. This is a culmination of all of their literacy lessons since returning to school. They have researched their own facts, constructed their own sentences using adjectives and conjunctions and put all of these wonderful sentences together to form some excellent pieces of text.

Continuous Line Drawing
Using ink, the whole class drew their chosen insects using the continuous line drawing method. They looked closely at the insect they were drawing (rather than at their sketches) whilst ensuring their pen wasn't lifted from the page until they knew they were completely finished. This was a great warm up for their main art task this week ...

Soft Pastels and Graphite Sticks
The whole class used soft pastels (Year 1), oil pastels (Reception) and graphite sticks to create these large scale insect sketches. They started by creating a coloured mass using two different coloured pastels, then used graphite sticks to add depth and detail.

Team Work
Children in Reception worked at their own table which was completely covered in a very large roll of paper. They joined in with the Year 1's to create their own pastel and graphite insects whilst listening to some relaxing music in the background. What a creative week so far!
Over the past few weeks, we have enjoyed the first few lessons of our 'Inspired by Flora and Fauna' unit.
Our Year 1's started by enjoying the work of Henri Rousseau, Jan van Kessel and the late local writer and illustrator, David McKee. We responded with our own drawings (ink on watercolour) and then added colour using pastels.
Our new reception children loved joining in too, with a few stray wild animals and Lilo (no Stitch).
What a creative start to the school year!
